  1. ║ Cellular Automata (CAs for short) are visible computations which take the   ║
  2. ║ form of realtime self-generating graphics movies.  The most important       ║
  3. ║ near term CA applications are image processing and image generation.        ║
  4. ║ CAs are fun to look at, and they alter images in interesting ways.          ║
  5. ║                                                                             ║
  6. ║ CAs can be used to simulate processes as diverse as: turbulence,            ║
  7. ║ heat flow, the mixing of gasses, the spread of disease, predator-prey       ║
  8. ║ ecologies, erosion, and crystallization.  CAs are important for physics,    ║
  9. ║ chemistry, biology, computer science, and the new discipline of             ║
  10. ║ artificial life.                                                            ║

  12. ║ CAs are fully parallel computations.  In a CA computation, the screen is    ║
  13. ║ broken up into small cells which behave like independent, synchronized      ║
  14. ║ processors.  Each of these cells perform the same computation over and over,║
  15. ║ basing its successive states on the states of its nearest neighbors.        ║
